If you’ve driven by the PK Victoria studios at 579 gorge road east you know the Rockslide Gallery
(headed by Logan Ford
) is constantly displaying amazing local artwork. Our studios are located here as well and we are always inspired by what we see and want to shed additional light on the artists and their work. Enjoy!
Mitchell Villa was raised in Victoria, British Columbia. He studied visual art and received a diploma in Digital Design at Vancouver Film School. He was a participant in the 2015 Art Battle, a Canada wide live competitive painting event. Mitchell has also been a guest speaker at Studio 30 in Victoria. This lecture focused on his creative process and included a live demonstration of his techniques and methods. Most recently, Villa has been showcased at ONLOK Gallery, PK Sound, Corre Alice Gallery, Wheelies Motorcycles and The Fifty Fifty Arts Collective.
“My artwork involves a process of addition, subtraction and replication. I rework a painting by layering image upon image until my vision is portrayed accurately on a canvas. Peeling away the layers of each piece would reveal multiple discarded images, the end result evolves from failed attempts. This progression gives my work strength because for every brush stroke I have explored 5 others before arriving at the final solution. I pull from subject matter that emphasizes raw nature, combining both grotesque and beauty. I strive to capture life and movement, forcing energy into my paintings until they are no longer static 2d images. What remains after repeating multiple elements is an allusion of movement.”
